A DAY WITH KNIGHT FRANK – WEEK OF LEARNING - MAY 2024
14th May 2024, Sofa To Sailboats' skipper John-Kenneth 'JK' Habbershaw and his social media emissary parrot travelled to Knight Frank's Manchester office to participate in the Week Of Learning, which also included the themes of Movement and Development.
In December 2024, a crew of two will sail Poppet, their tiny 'dinghy with a lid' across three thousand miles of the Atlantic Ocean in a six-week expedition in aid of four charities. One of Sofa To Sailboats' founding ethos is 'anyone can learn to sail' and that with time and dedication, even the most enormous challenge with the smallest tools can lead to great accomplishments. This especially applies to our First Mate, Farris Collins (Knight Frank – Senior Process Analyst and a former Team GB Powerlifter champion), who has never sailed before!
JK Habbershaw delivered a presentation on the project goals, shared his mental health journey from his 'sofa to his sailboat' whilst battling PTSD, and spoke about the great work that Macmillan Cancer Support, Mind, MS-UK, and St Helena Hospice do for local and national communities.
There was also an opportunity to talk about the specialist equipment that will be onboard the boat and how the adventure is taking place using only renewable energy, ocean-friendly cleaning and personal care products, and, where possible, sustainable sources of used or recycled kit. Furthermore, JK talked about their liferaft, which has been suitably nicknamed 'Don't Poppet',
The presentation was well received, and the follow-up Questions and Answers session included 'Are you worried about whales?'. The nonchalant skipper merely replied, 'It's not the whales I am worried about; it's the lack of food variety and the thought of a marlin piecing the boat whilst I am in my bunk that keeps me awake at night.'.
Donations on the day, made by the kindness of Knight Frank employees, raised £204.00 for the charities and £20.00 sponsorship towards Poppet and equipment.
